The hotel’s We Share programme works with two local charities. Garouta do Calhau supports around 370 children and elderly people, by offering activities, meals and other assistance in several community centres in Funchal. Acreditar helps around 230 children with cancer, including financial assistance to families for visits to mainland Portugal for treatment.
Belmond Reid’s Palace employees do regular volunteer work with both of these charities. The hotel also makes financial contributions and in addition asks guests at check-out if they would like to donate € 2.00 (one euro for each).
Running for the Community
Belmond Reid’s Palace fields teams for a number of annual running competitions, to raise awareness and funds for good causes.
These have included a run through the center of Funchal to mark the global Earth Hour initiative, which draws attention to non-essential lights and shows their commitment to the planet.
Focus on Food
The hotel draws on its kitchen expertise to support a number food-focused community activities. Staff have participated in several local food bank events; in addition to collecting and organising the actual food donations the hotel has provided meals for up to 80 volunteer workers. Other charity events have included cooking a meal at a local school for deaf children.
The hotel sources food from local socially responsible suppliers wherever possible. For example cider and vinegar come from the local farm Quinta Pedagógica dos Prazeres. This not-for profit organisation employs people with disabilities and also helps local farmers to market their produce.
The hotel has created a herb garden, fertilised by in house organic compost, to supply its kitchens.
