Packing for a relaxing stay in the heart of the Riviera Maya is no small task, and moving seamlessly from airy ensembles to contemporary eveningwear takes some planning. As we reopen the doors of our restored hotel in the middle of this glorious stretch of coastline, rich with Mexican craft heritage, the freshly minted hotel has plenty of inspiration for the best local brands – from fashion to accessories.
Whether you’re an outfit repeater in search of inspiration or an avid curator of authentic artisanal pieces, we have selected the best of contemporary Mexican designers – doing the hard work so you don’t have to. Suitcases at the ready; here’s the new pulse of the Mexican fashion scene.
Characterised by a muted palette and striking prints, Sandra Weil’s collections are designed for women with a sense of flair. One of the most established clothing designers to be featured at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week México, Sandra explores her familial roots through her creations, blurring the line between casual day pieces and high-impact eveningwear.
Notice a penchant for fluid movements in a pair of wide-leg trousers, an ode to carelessness in the draped skirts, or try the sophisticated striped maxi skirt co-ords. Opting for a pair of elevated tailored Bermuda shorts? Let the knot detail speak for itself as you wander around the lush grounds of Maroma.
In Oriana Rodriguez’s atelier, unique beaded ornaments are at the centre of each creation, with strings of colourful spheres meticulously layered over leather. Like Mexican luxury fashion label Collectiva Concepción, Oriana proudly collaborates with skilled craftspeople, using the country’s highest quality materials to honour the artisanal culture and traditional heritage.
Slide a colourful bag up your arm with an evening sleeveless dress or a monochrome jumpsuit for maximum impact – the gold-tone signature handle gives it a contemporary feel. For a casual day look, try one of Oriana’s timeless suede bucket bags.
Amor & Rosas
Founded by Laura Meléndrez, Amor & Rosas is a B-Corp-certified Mexican clothing brand working with local artisans throughout the country, from Hidalgo to Chiapas. Recognised for meeting high standards of accountability, responsibility and transparency in their production, the label combines modern designs with an artisanal commitment.
Offering a relaxed flair (think off-white linen shirts ornated with playful embroidery), Amor & Rosas’ versatile menswear pieces are elegantly paired with colourful trousers for a contemporary look. Heading to dinner at Maroma’s new restaurant Woodend? Wear one of the brand’s airy designs with elegant black trousers for a modern look, to indulge in Chef Curtis Stone’s unique cuisine.
Born in a family of silversmiths, a strong sense of craftsmanship flows in Mexican designer Cristina Romo’s veins. In 2014, she founded the high-quality jewellery and homeware brand Romo Herrera with her partner, trained architect Eduardo Herrera.
Together, the duo experiments with artisanal techniques that uses silver, alloys and gold to create one-of-a-kind, floral-inspired jewellery. Shop the range of signature designs such as the Algas earrings or the breathtaking Arrecife headpiece in the Maroma boutique for a high-octane addition to your eveningwear looks.
Crafted by a group of local Mexican female artisans, Pawuamba’s eco-conscious vegan slides are inspired by the Purépecha culture – the Indigenous civilisation of Western Mexico. Reuniting women from rural communities with non-profit organisations, the sororal business brilliantly marries ancient craft to contemporary designs, while ensuring to work with low-impact and regenerated materials.
A splendid result, the Dos Raíces shoes are the perfect day-to-night choice, whether in a minimalist monochrome palette or a mood-lifting pink hue. The ideal pair to dress up or down any look, these pared-back designs with fringed detail elevates a walk from your intimate villa to the Maroma Spa by Guerlain.
