Amaryllis: Pontailler-sur-Saône to Dijon

A leisurely morning cruise gives you the chance to absorb the beauty of the French countryside. After a delicious lunch on board, alight to visit the historic Clos de Vougeot, where Cistercian monks first began making wine in the 12th century. The ancient château is now the headquarters of the celebrated Burgundian wine society, the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, and still houses the ancient cellar and wine presses from medieval times. After a local dégustation, rejoin the boat in St-Jean-de-Losne, the barging capital of France. Take time to stroll around the harbourside and see the many working barges and house boats moored here.

Spend the morning relaxing on board as we cruise towards the charming market town of Chalon-sur-Saône. Disembark for lunch at the fabulous Michelin-starred restaurant, Le Montrachet, in Puligny-Montrachet. In the afternoon, step out on a walking tour of Chalon with its quaint antique shops, stunning cathedral square and half-timbered buildings. There is free time to explore the inviting shops, or perhaps just pull up a chair at a pavement café and watch the world go by. Dinner is served on board.

Linger over breakfast and soak up the views as you continue cruising along the picturesque River Saône. After lunch, alight from the barge to visit Château de Pommard, one of the most beautiful wine estates in Burgundy, set among the verdant vines of the Côte de Beaune. Enjoy a private tour of the 18 th -century cellars and an expert-led tasting, admire the fine art collection and embark on a horse-drawn carriage ride through the celebrated vineyards. Tonight, you dine on the barge.

This morning, the pace and scenery change as the barge leaves the river and enters the Burgundy Canal. Take the opportunity to alight at a lock and walk or cycle along the towpath. After lunch on board, disembark to visit Beaune and its famous Hôtel-Dieu, a magnificent former charitable hospital renowned for its flamboyant gothic façade and innumerable artistic treasures. Afterwards, enjoy a private wine tasting and time to stroll through Beaune’s cobbled streets, browsing in the speciality shops. Return to the boat for cocktails on deck, followed by a sumptuous dinner.

Today your guide accompanies you on a fascinating walking tour of historic Dijon, capital of the great dukes of Burgundy. Visit the Ducal Palace, Grey Poupon mustard shop and lively food market. Tonight, the barge moors in the port of Dijon. As your chef prepares a farewell gala dinner, why not whet your appetite with a refreshing Kir made from local Cassis blackcurrant liqueur and Aligoté white wine.
