Built in the style of a Renaissance château, the grandeur of Waddesdon Manor never fails to astound. It was created by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in 1874 to house his incredible collection of artworks and to entertain his fashionable guests, but is equally famed for its colourful Victorian gardens and magnificent wine cellars. Highlights include a marvellous mechanical elephant, which once captivated the Shah of Persia, wall panels depicting dragons, butterflies and monkeys, and a Dining Room that conjures up a mini Versailles.
Your day begins as you board our art deco train at London Victoria Station. Note your steward’s iconic uniform and the exquisite craftsmanship of your authentic 1920s carriage. Each carriage is different and boasts a fascinating history as well as lavish individual décor. A comfortable armchair awaits you at a pristine table with a view. Sip a sparkling Bellini cocktail and savour a delicious brunch as the train makes its way out of London towards Oxford.
On arrival at Oxford Parkway Station, your guide meets you and accompanies you on the 45-minute transfer to Waddesdon. Here, after an introduction and time to explore the house, you gather in the Waddesdon Manor wine cellars to learn about the Rothschilds’ winemaking heritage and enjoy a tasting. Afterwards there’s a little time to visit the shop and grounds, where gems include artificial grottoes, a restored water garden and an aviary.
At the end of your visit, return by coach to Oxford Parkway Station, where you rejoin the train. A glass of chilled champagne is served as soon as you settle into your seat. Share your thoughts on the splendour of the château as you anticipate a delectable three-course dinner. It’s accompanied by our sommelier’s choice of wine and rounded off with coffee before the train arrives back at London Victoria.
