Hello From the World’s Highest Beach

Words by Belmond Editors
People relax on a sandy beach under blue and white parasols, facing a calm, expansive body of water with distant mountains and clouds on the horizon under a clear blue sky.

Most beaches meet the sea, however, this one greets the sky. Stake your spot at Collata Beach on Lake Titicaca’s Taquile Island, where Belmond’s Andean Explorer is offering a rare trip to the shore at an altitude of nearly 4,000 metres.

For many, the idea of a “highest beach” might sound like an oxymoron. But for intrepid travellers in Peru that like to tick off a superlative or two, a stop at Collata Beach is a must. Perched atop Taquile Island in the sparkling waters of Lake Titicaca, it claims the unique title of the world’s highest beach. At 3,900 meters above sea level, its soft sands and gently sloping shoreline may seem familiar, yet sunbathing high above the clouds is anything but ordinary.

That’s exactly the kind of delight that the Andean Explorer delivers, a luxury train that winds through Peru’s dramatic landscapes to reveal vistas that feel plucked from another world. Here, “beach” takes on a new meaning: a rare marriage of high-altitude serenity and the tactile pleasure of sand beneath your feet. Compared with the world’s lowest beach – by the shores of the Dead Sea, which is around 440 meters below sea level – this one feels almost like a mirage.

The Andean Explorer train makes this extraordinary destination part of its regular itineraries across the Peruvian Andes, but this is no ordinary beach day. On arrival, you’re welcomed with traditional local dance before sinking into a plush lounger in the shade. You can then choose to paddle in the crystal-clear water, join a yoga session or try your hand at painting the scenery, where every moment is framed by the lake and endless blue sky.

Visiting a beach at nearly 4,000 meters on Lake Titicaca is unlike any other and a little preparation goes a long way toward making the day unforgettable. Bring layers to stay cosy in the crisp high-altitude air – light jackets and long sleeves will keep you comfortable by the lake. Sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen are essential to shield against the intense Andean sun, while sturdy shoes will help you navigate the sandy and sometimes rocky shores. To fully enjoy the experience, pace yourself and stay hydrated to acclimate to the elevation; a gentle walk along the shoreline or a yoga session will be far more rewarding when your body is settled. The months from May through September are ideal for clear skies and vibrant views, letting every moment feel effortless and magical. Board our luxury train in Peru and let us take care of the rest.

While many will flock to busy tourist spots in Peru to hike the rainbow mountain of Vinicunca, catch a glimpse of Machu Picchu or head to the skies to see the Nazca lines – all worthy of seeing in their own right – there's something special in knowing that you’re in a place without the crowds and before the hype. Collata Beach is one of the most unique places in Peru – an experience that will linger in memory long after the train rolls on.
