Eastern & Oriental FAQs
Before You Travel
What are the passport and visa requirements for my journey?
All visitors to Malaysia must be in possession of a valid passport, with at least 6 months validity from the date of your return. It is the responsibility of each individual passenger to ensure that they are in possession of any necessary and valid visas and/or documentation. Belmond assumes no responsibility for the consequences of any failure to comply.
You should ensure you have at least 6 months validity left on your passport from your date of arrival. This applies to both adult and child passports. If you renewed a passport before it expired, extra months may have been added to your new passport’s expiry date. Any extra months on your passport over 10 years may not count towards the 6 months that should be remaining for travel to most countries in Europe.
We recommend that all passport holders check with their national government agency for up-to-date information.
What are the customs formalities between Singapore and Malaysia onboard the Eastern & Oriental Express?
During your Eastern & Oriental Express journey, you will undergo customs and immigration formalities at the border between Singapore and Malaysia. Our staff and agents will provide assistance to facilitate these procedures, but it is ultimately the passenger's responsibility to possess all necessary and valid documentation.
- Border crossing: at the Singaporean/Malaysian Customs and Immigration facility, the train will stop, and all passengers must disembark. You will need to take all your hand baggage with you to clear immigration. Your main luggage will be removed from the train for security screening.
- Prohibited items: customs regulations are strict, particularly regarding narcotics, which carry severe penalties, including the death penalty in certain cases in Malaysia and Singapore. The importation of all prohibited items is strictly enforced.
- Self-clearance: when departing and returning into Singapore, passengers will clear immigration formalities by themselves at the border checkpoint.
- Time allowance: please allow sufficient time for these formalities when planning your onward travel arrangements after your journey.
Will I need travel insurance for my trip onboard Eastern & Oriental Express?
We strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance as soon as you book your journey or holiday. If you have not already done so, we suggest you contact your travel agent or the Belmond Reservations Office in your home country to assist you.
Luggage & Cabin Comfort
What are the cabin options onboard the Eastern & Oriental Express?
The Eastern & Oriental Express train features elegant private cabins.
- Pullman Cabins (5.8 sq m): During the day, comfortable seating converts into upper and lower berths at night.
- State Cabins (7.8 sq m): Daytime seating converts into two single beds at floor level at night.
- Presidential Suites (11.6 sq m): Our most spacious option, featuring daytime seating that converts to two single beds at floor level at night. Presidential Suites also offer ample room to entertain guests and include a complimentary minibar and Nespresso machine.
All cabins feature an en-suite shower and toilet, hairdryer, personal safe, and 3-pin UK standard electrical sockets (220 volts).
What is my luggage allowance on the Eastern & Oriental Express?
Due to space constraints onboard the Eastern & Oriental Express, our luggage allowance is carefully managed, as outlined below.
- Pullman & State Cabins: Each passenger is limited to one piece of luggage weighing up to 30kg, plus one piece of hand luggage (to be kept in your cabin).
Presidential Suites: Guests are allowed one piece of luggage up to 30kg, plus one piece of hand luggage (to be kept in your cabin).
We also categorise luggage into three types for your convenience:
- Through luggage. We suggest that items not required for your journey are packed separately in a sturdy case. At check-in, this luggage will be labelled by our staff, after which it will not normally be accessible until you reach your destination. Ideally, large and/or hard cases should be checked in as through luggage.
- Compartment luggage. This should contain clothing and items you need during your journey. When you plan your luggage, please bear in mind that storage space is limited. There is a luggage rack, plus an additional storage cupboard with hangers. One or two soft-sided suit carriers or similar can be comfortably accommodated in each compartment.
- Hand luggage: Your passport, tickets, jewellery, money, camera, fragile items and any medication should be kept in your hand luggage and not checked in. We advise that you take out insurance to cover any loss or damage to your luggage, and recommend that all valuable items are kept in your cabin’s safe.
Dining Onboard
What should I know about the dining cars on the Eastern & Oriental Express?
There are two restaurant cars – each decorated with floral motifs reflecting the culture of the region, with wood design inlays and hand-painted flowers.
Distinctive cutlery and hand-cut crystal glassware are used. Table d’hôte meals are included in your fare. Breakfast and afternoon tea are served in your cabin or in the restaurant car. For passengers wishing to rise early to take advantage of the beautiful scenery, tea and coffee will be served in the Observation Car from 7am onwards.
We can cater for special dietary requirements. To avoid disappointment, please inform us fully of your personal requests at least 14 days in advance. We regret that we are unable to provide meals requiring strict religious observance in their preparation.
Should I confirm dining reservations in advance?
To comfortably accommodate all passengers, meals have multiple seating times. Preferences for seating times can be noted in advance; however, reservations will be confirmed once on board.
Which drinks will be available aboard the Eastern & Oriental Express?
Complimentary tea and coffee are available at all times. A selection of wines, spirits and local beers can also be served. Premium drinks and drinks served to your cabin will incur an additional charge. Bar drinks may be ordered in the Observation Car, the Bar Car, or served in your cabin by your steward.
The Bar Car stays open as long as you wish, but drinks service may be temporarily suspended at the Singaporean/Malaysian border for Customs formalities or at the Train Manager’s discretion.
