What currency is used in Peru, and what is the tipping etiquette?

Peru’s official currency is the Peruvian sol. Tipping is appreciated but not always expected. In taxis, tipping is not necessary, though a small tip may be given for exceptional service. For tour guides, a tip of $5–$10 USD (approximately 15–30 soles) per day is customary, while porters, drivers, cooks and similar staff typically receive $3–$5 USD (9–15 soles) per day; private drivers are often tipped $5–$10 USD per day, depending on the level of service. In hotels, porters are usually tipped about $1 USD (2–3 soles) per bag, while tipping housekeeping or room service is optional and based on service quality. In restaurants, a 10% tip is standard in larger or upscale establishments and may already be included in the bill; additional tipping is optional for exceptional service. In mid-range restaurants, tipping is optional, though leaving 1–2 soles is a kind gesture, and no tip is expected in budget or family-run eateries.
