La historia de la finca se remonta 2500 años atrás, hasta los etruscos, una época de floreciente comercio y esplendor artesanal. El corazón del hotel fue en su momento un castillo medieval, construido en el año 998 para aprovechar las amplias vistas del lugar. La familia aristocrática Bargagli cultivó y desarrolló la propiedad durante el siglo XIX, y a lo largo del siglo XX, distintas familias nobles lo proyectaron hacia la élite mundial.

Fue entonces cuando el director Luchino Visconti tomó el mando, añadiendo un toque de grandiosidad hollywoodiense que aún resuena hoy en día.
