Die Geschichte des Anwesens reicht 2.500 Jahre bis zu den Etruskern, einer Blütezeit von Handel und Handwerk, zurück. Das Herzstück des Hotels war einst eine mittelalterliche Burg, die 998 aufgrund des Rundumblicks hier erbaut wurde. Die aristokratische Familie Bargagli erweiterte das Anwesen im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts. Weitere Adelsfamilien führten es bis ins 20. Jahrhundert und machten es zu einem Anziehungspunkt für die internationale Elite.
Zu dieser Zeit übernahm der Filmregisseur Luchino Visconti die Leitung und verlieh dem Ort den Hollywood-Glamour, den er bis heute verströmt.
