Embrace tradition with our iconic afternoon tea, served in the Lounge as live piano music sets the scene. With more than 60 loose-leaf teas from across the globe, unique coffees and an array of sweet and savoury delicacies, high tea at the Nellie has become a beloved Cape Town tradition.

Craig Cupido, Tea Sommelier

Craig Cupido, South Africa’s first expertly trained tea sommelier, is on hand to guide you through our 60 different tea varieties. You can also join him for tasting sessions, food pairings, masterclasses or traditional tea ceremonies.

Vicky Gurovich, Executive Sous Chef

Acclaimed pastry chef and Executive Sous Chef Vicky Gurovich creates irresistible treats, elegantly arranged on stands brimming with fruits and mousses. Her sweet treats include baked milk tarts, dark chocolate mud cakes and fluffy scones.

In 1840, the 7th Duchess of Bedford asked that a tray of tea, bread and cake be bought to her room at 4pm, since dinner was served so late. She began inviting friends for this high tea ritual, which became a fashionable way to entertain. Afternoon tea was introduced at Mount Nelson in 1989 and has always been served in the Lounge from the Windsor Table.
