La storia della tenuta risale a 2.500 anni fa, all’epoca degli Etruschi, periodo di grande fioritura commerciale e di sviluppo artigianale. Il cuore dell’hotel era un tempo un castello medievale, costruito nel 998 approfittando della splendida vista panoramica del luogo. La famiglia aristocratica dei Bargagli valorizzò ulteriormente il sito nel corso del XIX secolo, e le casate nobiliari che si succedettero nel XX secolo lo resero una meta ambita dall’élite internazionale.
Fu in questo periodo che il regista Luchino Visconti ne assunse la gestione, apportando un pizzico di sfarzo hollywoodiano ancora oggi palpabile.
