The Crafting of Maroma

Newly redesigned in 2023, internationally renowned design studio Tara Bernerd & Partners honoured Mexican heritage while enhancing Maroma’s original architecture, whose white stucco buildings follow the Sacred Geometry of Mayan masonry.

Reflecting a journey through Mexico, 80% of the furnishings and objects are handcrafted locally. Ceramicist José Noé Suro collaborated with the studio to create more than 700,000 hand-painted Jalisco clay tiles for the guestrooms, while Henequen Textiles produced rugs from agave fibre and artist Eduardo Ricon created shadow boxes featuring native botanicals.

The design channels relaxed, hacienda-style living, blending contemporary elegance with warmth. Handwoven textiles from Oaxaca, glazed Saltillo tiles from Guadalajara, Yucatan timber doors and shell chandeliers inspired by Mayan jade jewellery celebrate local craftsmanship. Wood, stone, iron and ceramics were all sourced from Mexico. Curved forms, natural materials and expansive Caribbean views connect the interiors to the surrounding landscape, while redesigned pools feature volcanic Sukabumi stone tiles echoing the turquoise tones of nearby cenotes.
