Visiting Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Be the first in the citadel gates when they open at 6am as the sun rises over the mountain peaks. Whether you’d like to take a serene walk to the picture-perfect Sun Gate, want to climb Huayna Picchu or aim to tackle the more challenging Inca Trail, Sanctuary Lodge can handle all the arrangements. We provide expert advice and tips for visiting Machu Picchu, including when and where to go, for the best experience.
Unmissable Sights
Machu Picchu Citadel
This architectural complex, made up of more than 200 houses, temples, roads, terraces and aqueducts is a testament to Incan engineering. It’s open to the public from 6am to 5.30pm daily.
Huayna Picchu
Entrance to this mountain behind the citadel is limited, but well worth it. Wind around the side of the mountain to see Machu Picchu from angles most people can only dream about.
Inca Trail
For many, to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is an experience of a lifetime. It’s a tough climb, but our guests can look forward to a revitalizing massage at the summit.
Inti Punku
Inti Punku is the official entrance to Machu Picchu. It includes a beautiful trail that threads through agricultural terraces along Inca stone paths, taking about an hour each way.
Machu Picchu
This ‘old mountain’ reaches 3,100m into the Andean sky. For a relatively easy, steady climb, the views from the summit are rewarding. Expect breathtaking vistas across the citadel and cloud forest.
