Christmas Markets

Madeira’s festive markets are unique, not only for the beauty of the flowers on display, but also for the diversity of food, tropical fruits and the lively atmosphere. Visit Avenida Arriaga throughout December to enjoy the range of markets stalls.

On 23 December each year, the farmers’ market is a highlight and home to the celebrated “Night at the Market”, a last chance for people to do their Christmas shopping. As night falls, the streets close to traffic and thousands of people arrive to enjoy the buzzy atmosphere among stalls selling fresh produce, sweets, drinks, Christmas trees, floral decorations and other seasonal treats. From 8pm onwards, locals and visitors alike gather at the fish market to sing popular Christmas carols, and with the bars open all night, the festivities continue until dawn.
