Reid’s Palace FAQs
About the Hotel & History
Who was Mr. William Reid, the founder of Reid’s Palace?
Mr. William Reid was the visionary Scottish entrepreneur who founded Reid’s Palace. A pioneer in luxury tourism, he arrived in Madeira in 1836 and, foreseeing the island’s potential as a premier destination, embarked on building a grand hotel that would become a beacon of hospitality. Though he passed away before its completion, his sons continued his dream, and the hotel, originally named The New Hotel, eventually became the iconic Reid’s Palace, opening its doors in 1891.
Was Reid’s Palace always a hotel, and how old is it?
The magnificent building that houses Reid’s Palace was specifically conceived and built as a luxury hotel. Construction began in 1887, and the hotel, originally known as ’The New Hotel,’ officially opened its doors in 1891. This makes Reid’s Palace over 130 years old, consistently operating as one of Europe’s most distinguished hotels and a cherished landmark in Funchal, Madeira, steeped in a rich history of welcoming royalty, dignitaries, and celebrities.
