Contemporary Culture
A stage for local art and supporters of cutting-edge fashion, we champion the past, present and future of South African culture.
The area at the base of Table Mountain was built into a family homestead by Sir Hamilton Ross in 1843, establishing the most beautiful garden in Cape Town. In 1899, it opened as a luxury hotel to rave reviews.
Mount Nelson was painted pink for peace in 1918 at the end of World War One, the same shade it remains today. We spent the next century welcoming world luminaries, from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to John Lennon, Marlene Dietrich and the Dalai Lama.
Whether as a place of pilgrimage or a place to party, the rose-tinted walls of what has become affectionately known as ‘The Nellie’ always offers a joyful welcome.
