Partnering with Parley for the Oceans

We have always been passionate about ocean conservation efforts and our dedication to sustainability is strengthened by a new partnership with non-profit organisation, Parley for the Oceans.

United by a joint passion for protecting the oceans through education and conservation, we want to set a new standard for the hospitality industry. The collaboration will provide Maroma with a framework for expanding our commitment to the ecosystems and communities that we exist within.

The starting point for both Maroma and Parley is within the local community, creating a team of ‘ocean guardians’ to oversee a range of initiatives at Maroma. Through a series of immersive workshops created in collaboration with Parley’s network, this initiative places local voices at the forefront of ocean conservation efforts and equips people with the knowledge of the incredible biodiversity found along the Riviera Maya.

The Ocean Guardian program at Maroma has joined Hawaii-based non-profit ocean research group The Mega Lab and their community science project Map2Adapt. Map2Adapt blends community engagement with education and cutting-edge scientific research, creating a locally embedded project with global significance. The Mesoamerican Reef, which runs just off the coastline of Maroma, is the largest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere, and the new survey is focused on understanding the health of this fragile but mighty ecosystem.

The programme focuses on three key areas:

• Awareness, organising talks and initiatives to educate colleagues and guests about ocean and coral conservation.
• Immersion and supporting coral mapping efforts
• Activism, leading beach clean-ups and coral mapping for colleagues, reflecting the power of collective action.

2026 marks an important evolution of our relationship with Parley, as Ocean Guardians are not only participating but being trained to lead beach cleanups and coral mappings. Through collaboration with Parley, they will guide colleagues and guests in meaningful ocean experiences, strengthening both awareness and impact.

Building on the strong foundations of year one, this next phase focuses on expanding impact and strengthening engagement by creating immersive experiences within the Mesoamerican Reef and supporting local conservation initiatives such as coral restoration and education.
