Cusco Lights Up: Belmond Peru Unites Community in Festive Tradition

Belmond properties in Peru once again joined forces with the Municipality of Cusco for the annual Christmas tree lighting at Plaza Nazarenas.

Each year, Cusqueños (people of Cusco) gather at Plazoleta Nazarenas to welcome the festive season. Now a cherished tradition, the lighting of the Christmas tree ceremony brought together the community, local authorities and our Belmond teams in Peru were represented by Michael Leitao, General Manager of Monasterio and Palacio Nazarenas.

This year, local artisans played a central role in bringing the 10-metre tree to life. The Mérida family from Calca, the Munaychay shelter in Urubamba, and artisans from Chincheros crafted the decorations, honouring Andean culture and craftsmanship. The festivities also saw 200 children join in, sowing wheat that will later become part of the plaza’s vibrant display. Attendees were invited to write their wishes on ribbons and hang them on the tree, while the Choir of the Archdiocese of Cusco filled the plaza with enchanting music, adding to the magical atmosphere.
