Stratford-Upon-Avon by Steam

Be our guest

Enchantment spills from the pages of our favourite playwright on this spellbinding tour of Shakespeare’s home town. The British Pullman train sets the scene for a dramatic arrival in clouds of billowing steam at Stratford-Upon-Avon, where you’ll uncover the birthplace of this world-famous bard.

After British Pullman has pulled into London Victoria Station, amid clouds of steam, nostalgic whistles and much excitement, board the gleaming carriages of our art deco icon ready for your adventure. Settle into your plush armchair and admire the details of your vintage carriage. Aboard our luxurious train, every car is different, with polished marquetry, exquisite fabrics and woven brass luggage racks. Soon your liveried steward will serve a refreshing Bellini cocktail and delicious brunch. As you savour it at your elegant table, take in the changing views through your window on the journey to Stratford-upon-Avon. This medieval market town, with more than 800 years of history, is inextricably linked with its most famous son, playwright William Shakespeare. Your excursion today will give you an insight into his life in the West Midlands town.

On arrival at Warwick Parkway, your guide and a private coach are waiting to take you to Mary Arden’s House, home of Shakespeare’s mother, a 20-minute drive away. From this lovely rural farm, continue to the centre of Stratford to visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace, the writer’s half-timbered childhood home. Depending on the amount of time spent here, there will be some free time to explore the town at leisure. Make your own way to Stratford-upon-Avon Station (a short walk) in ample time to rejoin British Pullman in the late afternoon. The hissing of the locomotive, the smell of red-hot coals transports you back in time.

A glass of chilled champagne greets your arrival, after which a gastronomic four-course dinner is served, accompanied by our sommelier’s choice of wine. Before long you’re sipping an aromatic coffee and pulling into London Victoria Station, the end of a fascinating day. Please note, as this journey takes you inside old properties with small rooms, low beams, uneven floors and steep staircases, it may be unsuitable for guests with limited mobility.
