Itinerary

01

Bagan

On arrival guests will tour the bustling local market, off-the-beaten-track temples and the panoramic Thitsawaddy pagoda.

All guests join the barge at Taung Bi village. Meet your crew before enjoying lunch on board.

Disembark for an afternoon excursion to one of Bagan’s most significant pagodas, Ananda. This architectural masterpiece was built in 1090 AD and contains four stunning gilded Buddha statues. You will also be led on a torchlight tour of a small temple, opened exclusively for Belmond guests. A short walk brings you to a stunning view of 12th-century Thatbyinnyu, one of Bagan’s tallest pagodas, followed by a visit to a lacquerware workshop.

As daylight starts to fade, gather to watch the sunset over plains peppered with hundreds of ancient stupas. Round off your first day with a magical candle-lighting ceremony in a small temple. Return to the boat for a sumptuous dinner on the Observation Deck.

02

Bagan

Early risers may wish to visit the Healthy Juice Bar on the Observation Deck before sitting down to an extensive breakfast. There is a choice of morning activities available today. Join an early morning walking tour of Bagan’s temples, set off on a traditional horse and cart, visit a local village and learn about Belmond’s social contributions, or explore the region by bicycle. Alternatively opt for one of the most magical experiences and discover the temples from above on a hot-air balloon ride (supplement applies).

Return to the boat for a leisurely day of sailing. Take full advantage of the facilities on offer, from spa treatments and poolside relaxation to teatime treats.

In the afternoon, housekeeping staff will give a demonstration of how to tie a longyi and how to prepare thanaka. Peruse an exhibition by a local artist, and sit in on a fascinating talk on Myanmar culture from our expert guides.

A delicious grill dinner is served under the stars on the Observation Deck, with Asian and Myanmar-inspired cuisine and live cooking and grill stations. House wines are included, or you might prefer to choose a fine wine from our extensive international list.

After dinner, visit the Observation Deck for an unforgettable surprise on the river (weather permitting).

03

Mingun

Wake up to a selection of morning activities as the ship continues to sail north. Options include sunrise yoga, meditation, cookery demonstrations, and a fascinating talk on local healthcare projects by Dr Hla Tun.

After lunch, disembark for a choice of excursion. Join a guided walking tour of the charming city of Mingun, taking in key sights such as the world’s largest uncracked bell. Alternatively experience rural life in Myanmar, touring a village situated in the middle of the river.

Our New Year celebrations kick off in style with the Captain’s Cocktail Party. A live band adds to the party atmosphere as the sun sets over the Ayeyarwady River. For dinner our Chef has prepared an exquisite New Year’s Eve feast with wine pairing.

After dinner, make your way to the Observation Deck for an evening of dancing and celebration. The champagne flows as we count down to 2019. Make a wish as you release a Shan balloon into the Myanmar sky.

04

Mandalay

Early this morning, Belmond Road to Mandalay sails to the city of Mandalay, considered the religious heart of Myanmar. There is an option to join early morning almsgiving before a choice of excursion. Take a guided tour of some of the city’s most enchanting sights, including Kuthodaw Pagoda and Shwenandaw Monastery. Alternatively explore Mandalay’s local arts and cottage industries.

Both tours end at Shwe Kyet Yet village, the location of our private jetty near Mandalay, where you rejoin the ship for a New Year's Day Brunch.

In the afternoon, disembark for an excursion to discover the hills of Sagaing, the spiritual centre of Myanmar. Enjoy expansive views of the Ayeyarwady River from the Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda and visit a Buddhist nunnery to learn about the monastic way of life. End the day at the magnificent 200-year-old U Bein Bridge, one of Myanmar’s most photographed sites.

Return to the ship berthed at Shwe Kyet Yet village for an evening at leisure and look forward to a sumptuous farewell dinner in the Restaurant.

05

Mandalay

Enjoy an early breakfast before you disembark for your onward travel arrangements.

Please note

  • All timings are approximate and should be used as a guide only
  • The rivers of Myanmar vary from season to season, with as much as a 30ft variance in water level. From January through June, the Ayeyarwady’s levels may drop, creating a narrower channel for navigation. To allow for these changes, Belmond Road to Mandalay may operate a revised itinerary and mooring locations may be amended.

Our Best Available rate is subject to availability at time of booking, it is not applicable for parties of 12 or more. Please contact tcgroupsuk@belmond.com for group pricing.
