Itinerary

01

Mandalay

Meet your guides and board the ship at Shwe Kyet Yet village.

Meet your captain and crew before enjoying a delicious buffet lunch as the ship sets sail.

Disembark for a guided tour of Mandalay, considered the home of Burmese traditional arts. Explore some of its great treasures, including the UNESCO-listed Kuthodaw Pagoda and the atmospheric Shwenandaw monastery.

Pass through the streets of the marble quarter and see artisans at work, then continue to the outdoor workshop of a family of bronze casters. End the day with a visit to the 200-year-old U Bein Bridge, one of Myanmar’s most photographed sites.

Return to the ship for a cocktail party on the Observation Deck, followed by dinner in the elegant Restaurant. Enjoy a selection of gourmet Asian and Western dishes prepared by our chef. House wines are included with dinner, or you might prefer to choose a fine wine from our extensive international list.

02

Mandalay

Visit the Healthy Juice Bar on the Observation Deck before enjoying an extensive breakfast buffet. Early risers can choose to accompany our staff to the village for a traditional almsgiving ceremony.

Continue your cruise to Ava, the ancient imperial capital. You can choose to explore this majestic city by horse and cart or by bicycle, either with a guide or at your own leisure.

Mid-morning, return to the ship and set sail towards Bagan. Take time and make the most of the onboard facilities—indulge with a treatment in the spa, or simply unwind beside the pool.

There are a range of activities available this afternoon. Find out what your fortune holds with our astrologer, or learn how to tie a longyi (sarong) with our housekeeping staff. Get into the festive spirit and decorate some cookies at our holiday gingerbread station.

Sit in on a fascinating talk from our doctor about his activities in the local community. Indulge with a Myanmar-style afternoon tea in our Burmese Tea Shop.

In the evening, join the Captain and your fellow passengers on the Observation Deck for a special holiday toast. A live band will add to the party atmosphere as the sun sets over the Ayeyarwady River. Savour a delicious four-course Christmas feast with wine pairing. An evening of dancing and a festive surprise on the river round out the day.

03

Bagan

Those who wake early can join us for yoga on the Observation Deck or a meditation class in the Lounge.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast as the ship makes its picturesque entrance into Bagan. Explore the area with your choice from three optional morning tours. Discover some of the local history and temples with “Introduction to Bagan”, visit a local village and discover the culture with “A Day in the Life”, or be daring and enjoy a more active adventure with “Bagan by Bicycle”.

Return to the ship in the late morning and enjoy a sumptuous Christmas lunch.

In the afternoon, disembark for an excursion to Ananda Temple, one of the most significant pagodas of Bagan. This architectural masterpiece was built in AD 1090 and contains four gilded Buddha statues, each standing 30ft tall.

Continue on to a small temple, opened exclusively for Belmond guests, to discover magnificent murals by torchlight. A visit to a lacquerware workshop follows where you can watch the artisans busy at their craft. Finally head to a small temple close to the jetty for an enchanting candle-lighting ceremony.

Grilled specialities are a highlight of dinner, served beneath the stars on the Observation Deck. Afterwards you are treated to a classical marionette performance.

Please note

  • All timings are approximate and should be used as a guide only

  • The rivers of Myanmar vary from season to season, with as much as a 30ft variance in water level. From January through June, the Ayeyarwady’s levels may drop, creating a narrower channel for navigation. To allow for these changes, Belmond Road to Mandalay may operate a revised itinerary and mooring locations may be amended.
  • Our Best Available rate is subject to availability at time of booking, it is not applicable for parties of 12 or more. Please contact tcgroupsuk@belmond.com for group pricing.
