CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Belmond’s involvement began in 1997 when the company’s founder set up a nursery school in the village of Shwe Kyet Yet. Since then, our guests and staff have helped fund the construction of an infant playschool and a middle school in the village.
Belmond continues to help these schools as well as 10 others along the Ayeyarwady, providing practical support such as books, furniture, first aid and medicine. We also offer sponsorship for teachers’ salaries and underprivileged families, and are helping to upgrade primary, middle and secondary schools across the country.
Other recent projects include opening a new school building in the village of Pon, near Bagan. Belmond donates first-aid equipment to the school and stationery to all 152 students while supporting the salaries of three teachers. With our help, additional classrooms have been built for 160 students in the village of Htee Pu, as well as the reconstruction of a primary school in the village of Taung-bi.
In August 2011 we opened the Free Clinic in Bagan, thanks to donors and Dr Hla Tun, our onboard doctor and head of our Social Contribution programme. The people of Taung-bi and the surrounding countryside now have much-needed assistance, with medical volunteers generously giving their time at weekends. Since opening, over 40,000 patients have been treated in the clinic.
Through his work running clinics and fund-raising for schools, Dr Tun has also secured funds through a German foundation for a group of orphans with HIV.
As part of our philosophy to respect the environment, we treat waste and minimise our environmental impact to ensure that Myanmar’s beautiful landscapes will be enjoyed for countless years to come.
