Overview: Belmond Orcaella

One of the best ways to experience the intriguing Southeast Asian country of Myanmar is by river cruiser. This magical land, encircled by Thailand, Laos, China and India, has opened up to tourism in recent years but its great rivers still provide some of the finest forms of access. Belmond Orcaella, an intimate, boutique ship, is designed to reach remote, less travelled areas. It offers a selection of thrilling journeys between July and March, avoiding the hottest and rainiest months of the year.

Passengers may choose to start their journey in the bucolic central region of Myanmar at Bagan or Mandalay, or at Yangon in the south of the country near the Bay of Bengal. Yangon, the former capital, is home to the stunning Shwedagon Pagoda, fascinating markets and historic colonial buildings as well as Southeast Asia’s largest reclining Buddha. Waterways connect the city to the great Ayeyarwady River which runs north to south through the centre of Myanmar. So for guests staying at the Belmond Governor’s Residence hotel in Yangon it is possible to begin their trip here.

Having reached the Ayeyarwady, Belmond Orcaella travels north through verdant countryside to the ancient city of Bagan. Once guests have explored the highlights of the 2000 ancient temples the ship continues northwards to Mandalay, Myanmar’s bustling former royal capital. From here, the ship proceeds up towards the Chindwin river, which forks off the Ayeyarwady and runs up to Homalin near the Indian border. An alternative journey starts at Mandalay and continues north on the Ayeyarwady to Bhamo near the border with China.

Belmond Orcaella is an intimate river cruiser that glides along Myanmar’s two main rivers, the Chindwin and Ayeyarwady. Leave the ship to experience the country up close. Witness the shimmering temples that dot the landscape and join off the beaten track explorations to remote regions. Wander through hilltop villages, meet the locals and learn about their culture and hunt for the perfect souvenir in the bustling markets.
