Caribbean Calm
with Naomie Harris

An old proverb states: “Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are.” For actress Naomie Harris, the Caribbean is a place where authenticity and serenity go hand in hand. Follow her footsteps in the sand to Belmond Cap Juluca.

“The Caribbean is important to me because it feels like a home away from home,” Naomie Harris tells us. The British actress is one of the most sought-after names in Hollywood; a household name for her sensational performances in ‘Moonlight’, ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ and as the latest iteration of Moneypenny in the James Bond franchise. She has been nominated for Oscars, BAFTAs and Golden Globe Awards, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2017.

But here on Maunday’s Bay in Anguilla, she’s a world away from the silver screen. The platinum sands, pastel blue sky and lapping waves are cinematic, but the spirit is the epitome of Caribbean calm. “Being surrounded by beauty, I feel instantly relaxed as soon as I get here,” she affirms.

If Anguilla is a treasure trove, Belmond Cap Juluca is its most prized jewel. The white buildings gem the shoreline, shining against the rich emerald palms. It’s the ultimate in beach-chic indulgence; a barefoot escape where time stands still. Here you can connect with the island’s rich spirit through a host of authentic experiences, and discover yourself along the way.

“The people who inspire me the most are people who are constantly challenging themselves and wanting to grow and learn,” Naomie explains. “I think, ultimately, that’s why we’re all here, we’re all searching for our own unique way of expressing ourselves.”

The magic begins at first light. Step out from your beachfront suite to the powder-soft sands. Dive into the warm waters, swimming through the gentle crystal waves. Take your time and let yourself float, serenaded by birdsong and the ocean spray. Back on shore you’re greeted with plush bathrobes and invited to take a seat. Breakfast is already served.

Room for more relaxation? Opt for alfresco yoga with our resident yogi. The elevated outdoor pavilion ensures you’ve got the best view of the beach to inspire your session. Indulgence is served in authentic Caribbean style at Arawak Spa. A host of pampering massages, facials and body rituals feature nourishing ingredients like local rum and Anguillan salt. Our seafront cabanas are an ideal setting. You’ll never be too far from the soothing lull of the ocean.

Stepping away from the waves isn’t necessary, but Anguilla is full of wonders waiting to be explored. Meander through the swaying palms at your own pace with our bicycles. Perhaps take a journey to the Valley for an insight into the local culture. Your personal host has no shortage of suggestions on where to go.

More magic happens as the sun sets. Follow your nose and pad down to one of the resort’s acclaimed restaurants. They offer everything from refined Anguillan cuisine to delicious casual Italian. Or give in to the Caribbean spirit and head to one of the many local rum shacks, dancing barefoot to live music with a cocktail in hand. We insist that you take a moment to savour the canopy of stars reflected above the water before bed. You’re a world away, but somehow the things that matter have never been closer.

As Naomie says, “So often we’re all so hectic and busy, it’s magical when you can just take a moment to breath, be, and do nothing.”
