CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
In 2010 Belmond Hotel Monasterio set up a fair trade strategic alliance with a village community in the Sacred Valley near Cusco.
The project has since boosted the farmers' income sixfold and led to a huge improvement in their quality of life. In addition, organic fertilizers are now used instead of chemicals, despite their higher cost, resulting in healthier produce that does not pollute the land.
Over the years the diversity of crops has been expanded and now ranges from traditional staples such as potatoes and quinao to more unusual local varieties for which the farmers can obtain higher prices.
