The hotel supports ecology projects in the surrounding Iguassu National Park.

Saving threatened jaguars and pumas

Belmond Hotel das Cataratas sits in a vast tropical forest populated by animals including jaguars and pumas. Ten years ago, the population of cats had declined to only 25 to 30 pumas and a mere six to eight jaguars. The Carnivores of Iguassu project, which the hotel proudly supports, was launched to prevent their probable extinction in this part of Brazil. Now there are at least 60 and 35 respectively, including this one-year-old puma (pictured) and a number of breeding pairs.

Spreading the ecology message

Belmond Hotel das Cataratas supports an environmental school within the Iguassu National Park which children from state-run schools visit for classes on local ecology. A key part of this initiative is for them to share their new knowledge with family and friends.

Guests can also learn about the area by accompanying the hotel's eco-guide on early morning or evening walks when the park is closed to outside visitors and its wildlife is more likely to be seen.
