6 Nights: Canal du Midi on Belmond Alouette

Cruise along the quiet waters of the beautiful Canal du Midi while you learn the secrets of French cookery.

Day 1

Welcome Aboard

A champagne reception welcomes you on board. Tonight you’ll enjoy your first dining experience on Belmond Alouette.

Day 2

Cruise to Capestang. Tour Oppidum d’Enserune

Scotch Whiskey Tour

Cruise along the beautiful Canal du Midi to Capestang. 

On your first cookery lesson you will learn how to create the classic quiche Lorraine, a county-style terrine and a wonderful lemon tart served with a drizzle of caramel sauce. 

Today you'll visit Oppidum d’Enserune, a pre-Roman hill-top settlement and one of the most important archaeological sites in the region.

Day 3

Cruise to Le Somail. Visit Abbaye de Fontfroide

Enjoy a relaxing breakfast as you take in the grandeur and beauty of the Canal du Midi.

Return to the kitchen and learn to make a delicious avocado and cherry tomato gazpacho, perfect for the summer. In the evening rack of lamb is on the menu, served with a rich sauce made with red wine and tarragon.

You’ll visit the Abbaye de Fontfroide, a Cistercian monastery founded in the 11th century. On the way back to the boat, stop at Château Auris for wine tasting.

Day 4

Visit Narbonne and the market. Cruise to Homps

This morning, the chef will take you on a tour of the wonderful covered market in Narbonne. Help choose the ingredients for dinner in a market that is ablaze with colours, smells and sounds.

Enjoy lunch in the bistro across from the market, which specializes in local seafood, fresh from the Mediterranean Sea.

When you return to the barge, the fish purchased at the market will be the star of your bourride. A dish made with fresh local vegetables, monkfish and mussels, and served with garlic mayonnaise.

Day 5

Visit Minerve. Cruise to Trebes

After breakfast, visit Minerve, an old village on a limestone cliff. Stop at Peyriac-Minervois for wine tasting.

Return to the barge for lunch and enjoy the ever changing views from the comfort of the deck or perhaps walk or cycle along the tow path.

In the afternoon learn all about Mediterranean-style cooking, with an emphasis on light, fresh ingredients.

Day 6

Cruise to Carcassonne. Visit Carcassonne

Finish the week with a tour of Carcassonne, Europe’s largest medieval fortress.

Visit a restaurant in the old Cité, where the chef will explain how Carcassonne’s most famous dish, cassoulet, is made.

For your final cookery lesson on the barge, you’ll learn to prepare ravioli and a white wine reduction - the perfect dish to end the week.

Enjoy a farewell gala dinner on board.

Day 7

Disembark

After breakfast, disembark and transfer to the local train station.
