Positano is a popular beauty spot, characterised by its lovely Moorish architecture, pink houses decorated with Baroque stucco work and narrow, stepped alleys. In 1953, American author John Steinbeck wrote of it, “It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.”
The buildings of this pretty fishing village are stacked on terraces on the steep hillside and appear to cascade into the sea. The grand church of Santa Maria Assunta, its cupola covered with yellow, blue and green majolica tiles, provides a focal point to the picture-perfect townscape.
Head for the Marina Grande to watch the fishing boats and dine or have a drink at one of the atmospheric restaurants or bars.
