VOLUNTEERS CLEAR RUBBISH FROM A LOCAL FOREST
St Petersburg is surrounded by picturesque forests which are popular for leisure activities like walking, jogging, picnics, and picking mushrooms and berries. Sadly, rubbish is often left behind—and so a team of 28 volunteers from Belmond Grand Hotel Europe organised a team building clean-up day at Michurinskiy Forest, around 70km away.
The team filled 100 large bags of rubbish from among the trees and the shores of lakes. They cleared refuse pits that they discovered hidden among the trees—and filled them with sand, to prevent re-use. They then put up signs by the biggest pits warning that dumping rubbish harms nature and endangers forest animals.
When local residents heard about the plans they came and worked alongside the team, and helped dispose of the rubbish. Then, one of the hotel’s partner agencies offered transportation to the forest—and their drivers joined the clean-up team. The team is now planning further community activities around St Petersburg.
Belmond Grand Hotel Europe works with local orphanages and youth organizations to support those in need. The hotel arranges educational tours of its premises for college students and organises community activities for disadvantaged young people.
The hotel use eco-friendly paper and recycled packaging. Guests are offered online newspapers in order to economize on paper and ink cartridges.
